The Research

The 'trust hormone' was mislabeled

The molecule every fundraising blog calls the trust hormone may have been misnamed for at least a couple of decades. When researchers measured people's natural oxytocin and split trust into its parts, the hormone tracked caution, not trust. The donor opening your next appeal is not waiting to feel warm toward you. They are quietly looking for a reason to hold back, and your job is to give them fewer of them.

The finding

The headline study most people remember is Kosfeld and colleagues in Nature (2005), who gave participants intranasal oxytocin before an investment game and watched trusting behavior climb. The detail that gets missed is why. Oxytocin did not make people more willing to take risks in general. It specifically reduced their fear of being betrayed by another person. Trust, in their data, was the willingness to accept social risk, not a warm feeling.

A 2022 study sharpens this. Shou and colleagues, writing in PLOS ONE, measured natural salivary oxytocin in 197 adults and separated trust into two parts that social scientists treat as distinct: general trust, the belief that most people are trustworthy, and caution, the belief that you should watch your step when the stakes are uncertain. Oxytocin correlated with caution, not with general trust. The authors propose it be called the assurance hormone instead. The practical translation is uncomfortable: warmth does not manufacture trust. Trust is what remains after caution stands down.

That reorders the whole problem. Most appeals are built to add feeling. The research suggests donors are running a subtraction problem instead. They begin slightly guarded, and they give when something lowers the guard. Authenticity is the lever that does that work.

The Neurogiving angle

Underneath this is the brain's threat-detection system, with the amygdala scanning every message for cues that this is not really safe. Oxytocin's role is less about generating affection and more about quieting that alarm so a person can step toward another. This is the same circuitry behind the cortisol-then-oxytocin sequence I describe in the book, where a moment of tension has to resolve into relief before a reader is ready to act. If the relief never arrives, or if it feels staged, the alarm stays on.

Inauthenticity is not a moral failing the donor judges. It is a caution trigger the donor detects. A stock photo where a real face should be, a number with no source, an urgency that the facts do not justify, a tone that swings harder than the situation warrants. Each one is a small mismatch, and the brain is exquisitely tuned to mismatch. The donor may not be able to name what felt off. They only know they paused, and a paused donor is a cautious donor.

So the goal of an authentic appeal is not to feel more sincere. It is to remove the things that make a careful person hesitate. That is a different design brief, and a more honest one

The application: run a caution audit, not a warmth check

Open your most recent appeal and read it twice. The first read is the one you already do, asking whether it is moving and clear. Set that aside. On the second read, ask a single different question: where would a careful, slightly skeptical person pause? Mark every spot. The unverifiable claim. The borrowed face. The round number that arrived without a source. The deadline that does not match anything real. The sentence that is trying a little too hard.

You are not looking for what to add. You are looking for what to remove or substantiate. Then sit with the question worth investigating before next week: which of those caution triggers are you keeping because they genuinely help the donor, and which are you keeping because they are easy and the sector has always done it that way? That distinction is where most of the trust is won or lost.
